Sam Billings discovers the treasures of the Plaxtol Pirates

When you work hard as a team anything is possible and as a reward for their outstanding team work the junior section of Plaxtol Cricket Club (The Pirates) were delighted to welcome Kent and England star Sam Billings to help them celebrate a season of unrivalled success at their awards evening.

In the heart of this beautiful village is a picturesque cricket ground that has been the cricketing homeland for boys and girls for more than twenty years but 2017 will be remembered as their best to date.

A packed village hall shared Sam’s experiences playing cricket from the age of 4 and how rejection at the ripe old age of 6 helped him become the determined sportsman he is today. Having been turned down at district, county and International selection processes this simply fueled his ambition to become a professional cricketer.

The Plaxtol Pirates with Sam Billings

The young players reveled as Sam’s experiences unfolded and beamed when they all received their personalised medals from such an inspiring International sportsman.

Fitting reward indeed for such a successful season which has seen both the Under 11s and Under 13s win their respective leagues and the remarkable Under 9s who were crowned as Kent Champions in early September. The audience heard how team work and fun have been the key to the club’s success and whilst beating Bromley to be crowned 2017 Champions this was their fourth appearance in the Final in the last eight years which bodes well for the future of this thriving club. Impressed by what he heard Sam congratulated everyone for their magnificent achievements and offered words of advice that related to sport, school and life in general.

Outside of his busy playing schedule Sam is an ambassador for The Lords Taverner’s where he inspires people of all ages and abilities to challenge themselves and enjoy their sport, it was very evident why he had been handed such responsibility.

Chairman of proceedings Pete Horrell acknowledged that none of this seasons success would have been possible without the enormous support of the coaches, managers and helpers both past and present who have brought this cricketing community to life.

Charming and patient to the end Sam signed autographs, posed for photos and chatted to parents and grandparents, his personality shone brightly as did the ambition of this big hearted cricket club that welcomes boys and girls of all ages to join a very happy team, to find out more contact fryerpssubs@mybtinternet.com
