Otford United remain hopeful in Kent County League

The Kent County Football League (KCFL) announced that they will be operating a Points Per Game (PPG) season for 2020/21, with full relegation and promotion across all tiers. This was after member clubs voted to include the ruling prior to any matches being played this season.

All clubs in the KCFL will now know where they stand after each match and none more so than Otford United and their manager Ricky Tompkins, who took over the Premier Division side during their struggles last season.

Tompkins said that 2020 will continue to be very strange saying: “I can’t see the season ending in the normal way. Obviously we don’t know what is round the corner but we’ll take each game as it comes with the possibility of only playing each team once”.

“Our start to the season hasn’t helped us, with three losses and a draw, as we’d hoped to finish top six this year. In reality, we are now looking more like mid-table.”

Otford United saw an influx of new players over the summer with around 60% joining the club for the first time, many of whom have come from higher leagues. Tompkins commented: “The circumstances surrounding the season have helped us as there’s a severe lack of money at higher levels and people just want to play football. Unfortunately for us, the players are still gelling and creating defensive errors, which is something that we need to work on”.

Otford currently find themselves second from bottom of the league with just one point from their four matches. They are propped up by Ide Hill who have yet to register any points from their three matches. Crockenhill meanwhile have just the three points. Let’s hope our local sides all get the points they need to stay in the Premier Division come 2021.
