The Sevenoaks Suns are one of the leading basketball clubs in the country and during their years of operation, they have won 14 national championships, plus numerous medals in national championship competitions.
The senior women compete in the Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) and last season they completed a double, winning the WBBL Trophy and the WBBL Play-Offs, both of which were shown live on the BBC Red Button, the latter from The O2 Arena in London. Cat Carr, the Suns team captain, was also voted the MVP (Most Valued Player) in the WBBL Trophy final.
Len Busch, head coach of the Suns, won the Ed Percival Molten WBBL Coach of the Year award, a huge achievement in a growing sport. Originally from Chicago, Busch has been in charge of the Suns for 12 years. He said “The Sevenoaks Suns are the most successful junior female development club in the UK, winning 14 national championships in 5 different age groups.”
“We have added junior boys teams and look to continue our success. We are happy to call Sevenoaks our home.” he added.
Since they first started playing, more than 40 players have represented England and/or Great Britain in international competitions with 14 Suns going on to play university basketball in the United States.
The senior women’s season in the WBBL starts on September 30 and finishes with the finals in May 2018. The club also run National League teams for boys and girls from the ages of 12 to 18. They also run local league teams, mostly for under 12s and under 10s. Training takes place at The Sennocke Centre and Knole Academy with several sessions during the week (all year round) and matches taking place at weekends (Apr-Oct).
Although they have produced a number of elite players, they class themselves on not being an elite club – they are delighted to work with any player who wants to work to get better.
Pathway to the States
The Sevenoaks Suns also offer a comprehensive and successful pathway to the United States and most recently, nine Suns represented American Universities and to-date, 14 Suns have made the trip of a life time, with academic scholarships being achieved.
Through their well-established pathway to American universities, players graduate having achieved both their athletic and academic potential with the qualifications to open the doors to their future!
Following graduation, one amazing opportunity is to return to the Suns and play for the professional Women’s Basketball Team, alongside and against National and International players.
