Sevenoaks Town went ten points clear at the top of the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division table in a great game at Eden Park Avenue on Tuesday night.
Brett Ince gave the visitors an early lead which was doubled midway through the first half by way of an own goal, Stefan Wright receiving the unwanted applause. The hosts got back in to the game before the break also by way of an own goal, this time it was the unfortunate Billy Bennett heading into his own net.
Beckenham the went level after 66 minutes through Wright, this time scoring at the right end. As the game entered the final 15 minutes Kenny Pogue popped up to score the winner giving Sevenoaks breathing space over the chasing pack.
Sevenoaks Town went down to a 2-1 defeat at fourth-placed Whitstable Town on Saturday and manager Micky Collins said it was a really tough night against Beckenham.
“They’re a really good side and at two-all I felt it could have gone either way. I thought they were on top at that stage and we clung on and clung on and manged to get ourselves a third and see the game out”, he added after his side claimed their 20th league win of the season.
Crowborough Athletic and Whitstable Town are the only two clubs who could threaten Sevenoaks’ title success. With games in hand over Sevenoaks they could bring it back to a four point title race, however if Sevenoaks beat Crowborough on Easter Monday then the gap maybe just that bit too much for the East Sussex side. Whitstable then travel to Crowborough on April 12, where I’m sure there will be plenty of Sevenoaks supporters cheering on the draw.
