Sevenoaks Town back on track thanks to Pogue

League leaders Sevenoaks Town FC were on the road again at the weekend visiting Sheppey United in the Southern Counties East Premier Division, and after a string of draws they managed to secure their first three points of the new year beating their opponents 2-1.

Recent matches have seen Sevenoaks perform way below par and begged the question, are Sevenoaks punching above their weight?. The answer in short is no, however the more detailed answer is that they became complacent, that they were nursing a few injuries to key players and that maybe the squad wasn’t as strong as we all thought.

Town’s manager, Micky Collins, has worked hard to bring in new players during January and one of these, Kenny Pogue, who signed from Hastings Town FC, came off the bench on Saturday to score both goals and secure all three points. Pogue commented on Twitter: “Great character from the boys, always nice to come on and get two… not an easy place to go!”.

The result keeps Sevenoaks on top spot and with third-placed Beckenham Town drawing away at fourth-placed Crowborough Athetic, it has given them with a bit of breathing space for the time being. Although with another six, yes six league matches to be played in February, Collins will not want his team to slip up again, starting with a trip away to Bearsted next weekend.

Collins commented: “A sign of champions is that they don’t lose, if you play really badly and still stay unbeaten then it’s a good sign. We haven’t lost a league game since the second game of the season (an away match versus Cray Valley PM on a Tuesday evening), that’s an 18-game stretch, which is a personal record”.
