Sevenoaks Hockey Club’s Women’s 1s began their 2023-2024 National League Division 1 South campaign with a home match at Hollybush against Slough on Saturday afternoon. Sevenoaks fielded five young debutantes – Jess, Ruby B, Ruby M, Millie and Tegan – all making very promising starts.
Sevenoaks started strongly and moved the ball around quickly to open up the Slough defence. In the first quarter, the Sevenoaks attack was rewarded with a goal when Maddie Thompson neatly slotted the ball past the Slough keeper after the ball broke loose following a great base line run.
Frustratingly, Slough made the most of a counter attack and equalised within minutes of the restart.
In the second quarter, Jen Wilson deflected the ball into the goal as a result of a well-worked penalty corner to restore the Sevenoaks lead.
The second half was very tightly contested, and Slough managed to equalise once more. The rest of the game played out with chances at both end but the final score remained 2-2.
Next week the girls enjoy another home fixture, this time the Kent derby vs. Canterbury HC.
