Purple Army juniors past and present impress

An amazing result for Sevenoaks Hockey Club U18 boys on Sunday 6th February in a 2-1 win over Teddington, sees them head into the semi-final of the England Hockey National Cup. The furthest the team has reached in this prestigious competition.

The boys started strong and following a well worked move down the left the ball was crossed in and calmly finished by F Webster to give Sevenoaks an early lead. Sevenoaks sustained pressure and extended their lead before halftime with a well stuck shot on the reverse through the keeper’s legs from O Brooks.  Into the second half and Teddington fought back and grabbed a goal but Sevenoaks were able to see out the game for a well-deserved victory.

The legacy of the Purple Army lives on with two former SHC players – Ben Fox and Lewis Wilcher – now studying at Exeter University, have been named as part of the preliminary squad for the GB Men’s Elite Development Programme in 2022. Not to be outdone, current ladies 1st XI player, Ryana has also been selected for England Hockey U18 Girls squad.

Commenting on Ben, Lewis and Ryana, Ian Haley, SHC Head Coach said: “They should all be very proud of their achievements in reaching national squad level. They all have the potential to succeed at the top level due to their skill and dedication to the sport. All of their coaches and peers at Sevenoaks Hockey Club wish them the very best in their endeavours.”

Junior Hockey Club Chair, Jacqui Hudson added: “The U18 team has had an amazing season.   For the majority of the players in the squad this is their final season as SHC Juniors and many of them are already playing in our top 3 teams.  Good luck in the semis!”
