New Ash Green Women’s Rugby Club is still thriving after 30 years together

New Ash Green have had a women’s rugby team for over 30 years and are one of the oldest running women’s rugby sections in the UK. They are based in the North East corner of the Sevenoaks District where they play in the National Conference League Division 2 South East.

New Ash Green are a real mixed bunch of players with a wide age range of 18-50 and include women from all walks of life. The team consists of nurses, engineers, accountants and many of these ladies are also mums. One team member is serving in the British Army and has recently been selected for the Army Woman’s Rugby Team, but still goes back to train with her team and plays when she can, her mum is also a member of the team.

At New Ash Green the team play for the love of the game “It’s not all about winning, although we do love a good win!”.

The club have great socials at their clubhouse the ‘Pavilion’, including events for Octoberfest, Halloween, and Christmas to name but a few. After each game honours are awarded for forward and back of the match an event at which your drinking skills will be tested! If you don’t drink alcohol, non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. Team Captain Hollie is new to the role this season but has already helped with recruitment, organising games and with social events.

Over the last few years, the club have had a lot of their ladies retire from the sport and they are now pushing to recruit new players to bolster their numbers. No experience is needed just a pair of rugby boots and a ‘can do’ attitude. All training will be provided and even if you don’t know how to play rugby, the girls and the ladies first team coach Paul will help you. As part of his coaching team, Paul is supported by current men’s first team players and ladies who have recently retired helping out.

New Ash Green Women’s RFC are actively recruiting for new players of all ages and abilities. They train every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.00pm and their games are played on Sundays. If the team doesn’t have a game, they hold a training session instead. Training is located at the Pavilion Grounds, Punch Croft, New Ash Green, Longfield Kent, DA3 8HS.
