Covid restrictions meant a slow start to the summer bowling season but as soon as it was allowed, Holmesdale Bowling Club reopened up its green and members trickled back eager to play their favoured outdoor sport again. In particular, the social Tuesday afternoon of bowling has been a great success helped by an influx of 15 new members. Regular friendly matches against other Clubs, also keen to resume bowling, have been enjoyed.
The Kent Competitions were able to take place once again this season. The County is divided into four Divisions, Holmesdale being in Division 3 covering 39 Clubs in the north of Kent.
Steve Cooper had a fine run in the singles before going down 20-21 in the Divisional semi-final. Angela Flint and Mary Chapman won four games to reach the Divisional Final of the ladies pairs where they went down to Queenborough.
Holmesdale’s best achievement came from Denise Smith, Mary Chapman and Jose Young in the Benevolent Two-Wood Triples Day held at Chatham Bowling Club. From an entry of 24 teams and played on a round robin basis, the Holmesdale ladies were on fine form winning two games comfortably, losing another by one shot, but in the process scoring sufficient shots to become the Division 3 champions.
In the local Marshall Cup, the Holmesdale men’s team defeated Sevenoaks to reach the final where they will play their second string, Montreal Park, who had a surprise victory over Borough Green from a division higher. The final took place at Sevenoaks Bowling Club at the end of August.
