FOOTBALL FEATURE: A league of their own

The Kent County League is a football competition based in Kent. The league has seven senior divisions – a Premier Division, Division One East and West, Division Two East and West and Division Three East and West. It sits just below the Southern Counties East League Division One, which is step six of the National League System.

In the 2017-18 season, there are five clubs from the local area participating in the league. Otford United FC are in the Premier Division, with Chipstead FC, Halstead United FC and Ide Hill FC playing in the Division One West, and Hildenborough Athletic FC in the Division One East.

Otford and Hildenborough have both struggled at the start of the season and without a win between them it could be a very long year indeed.

In contrast, Chipstead, Halstead and Ide Hill have all started well, with a win each in the league. Although we will lose another local club in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield when Chipstead visit Ide Hill on October 21st.

The visit of St Peter FC of Jersey

Otford United recently hosted St. Peter FC from Jersey in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield

In a bizarre set of circumstances, St.Peter FC who play their football in Jersey, applied to play in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield, with the ruling that they would have to play all matches away from home.

The Channel Islanders left Jersey at 8:00am for their flight to Gatwick, before playing Otford United at 2.15pm. St.Peter’s teenager Sol Solomon ended United’s interest in the competition when the 16-year-old substitute struck the 67th minute winner.

After a quick post-match drink in the Eric Dilley Pavilion they headed back to Gatwick for a 6.45pm flight home. They are now planning an overnight trip when they make their cup return on October 21st to face either Halls AFC or Farnborough Old Boys Guild.
