Amateur Boxing Clubs prove a big hit with local showcases

West Kingsdown Boxing Club staged their first show of the season, Round 2, on Saturday 20th October at their Village Hall with 16 hotly contested and evenly matched bouts.

The host’s Simon Briggs and West Ham’s Craig Scott delivered a thrilling finale to a great day of amateur boxing. The senior light heavyweight all southpaw affair just topped the previous contests for drama and real quality with a gutsy rally from Scott proving not quite enough. Briggs took the first two rounds administrating a standing count early on in the first and continued his success in round two with neat, fast combination counter punching.

Scott had more success in the last round, landing several big left hands just before the bell, however, it was Briggs who earned a unanimous decision much to the delight of the home crowd with both boxers deservedly winning the Best Bout award.

New Youth Olympic Champion Karol Itauma from St Mary’s BC, was on hand to present this award, having just touched down from his heroics in Argentina. Itauma also presented his club mate, Louise Orton, with best away boxer for her controlled unanimous points win over Xian Blackman-Price from Heart of Portsmouth BC.

West Kingsdown, in their second competitive season were disappointed that 2 of their boxers’ bouts fell through on the day due to opponents failing to make agreed weight limits. They had 3 out of 5 wins on the day, as well as a skills contest with Joe Lee performing very well against his more experienced opponent, Jayden Wyatt of Shaun Brown BA.

Tyler Davies-Grant lost a split decision against Westree’s Charlie Whitehead. Davies-Grant gave a good account of himself and will come again.

Hot prospect Xavier Claudel boxed beautifully to gain a unanimous points victory and best home boxer award over Davis Krasovskis (Hornets) who performed admirably after taking the bout at 2 days’ notice, but Claudel’s clever movement and punch picking proved too much for him on the day.

Harvey Martin bounced back from a controversial points loss in the recent Development Championships with a win against the tall, rangy Joachim Johnson from Cricklewood BC. Johnson posed a few problems for Martin in a tactful affair, but Martin got home by a unanimous points decision.

Sam Woodhead made his debut for the hosts in a hard-fought battle against Engwa Limbu (Ashford). This one went back and forward with both boxers enjoying different successes as the contest ebbed and flowed much to the delight of their supporters. At the end both boxers received a great ovation from the crowd and it was Limbu’s greater experience that saw him home on a close decision.

Head Coach Mickey Bowden was delighted with the show and plans on holding three more this season with the next one, a dinner show, booked for December 6th at the Brands Hatch Mercure Hotel.

Ted Cheeseman took time out from his British title training camp to hand out trophies for the junior boxers and show his continued support to West Kingsdown and grass roots amateur boxing in general.

SABC take over at the New Beacon
Over 200 guests attended the 5th Annual boxing dinner show at the New Beacon School in Sevenoaks, hosted by Sevenoaks Amateur Boxing Club (SABC).

Glamorous guests arrived in black tie and evening dresses to enjoy an evening of Champagne, a three-course meal, live music and magicians, whilst patiently waiting to see the main event of nine Amateur Boxing Junior and Senior Bouts.

The boxers have, for months and months, shown incredible self-discipline, dedication and completed endless hours of training to prepare their three rounds lasting two minutes each. All the hard work paid off and family, friends, coaches and clubs were all very proud.

There was fantastic team spirit amongst all Sevenoaks Amateur Boxing Club boxers and coaches throughout the evening

“Boxing is a science. You don’t just walk into a gym and start punching. Fighters are born with differences in their skills. That is the trainers influence at work!“ commented Andrew Knight, Head Coach at SABC.

The money raised during the show goes straight back into the charitable boxing club and it’s running on a daily basis as well as donating money to the Royal British Legion.

Lewis “Lion Heart” Syrett, also popped along to support his local club. Lewis had 48 bouts for Sevenoaks before commencing his professional boxing career and has four winning bouts under his belt all at the famous York Hall.

The hard work never stops; the boxers will all be back in training focusing on their next Amateur Boxing adventure and you will find SABC members sweating away every Monday and Wednesday in their Junior and Senior sessions.
