Hildenborough resident and Kickboxing instructor Alex Chalke has reached the pinnacle of his sport, securing the gold medal and the prestigious title of European Kickboxing Champion. After two intense and hard-fought matches in this year’s championship, Chalke emerged victorious against some of Europe’s toughest competitors, including national champions from Greece and Germany.
Chalke’s road to victory began with a decisive win over Greece in the opening round. Demonstrating his technique and control early on, Chalke delivered a powerful right hand that stunned his opponent, forcing him on the defensive. “There are no easy fights at this level,” Chalke reflected. “After dropping him with a hard right hand, he was on the back foot until I won.” Chalke’s dominant performance set a confident tone as he advanced to the final.
The final, however, proved to be a much tougher challenge. Chalke faced Germany’s national champion, a seasoned fighter with multiple European and International titles to his name. “He hits hard! He was certainly not easy to beat,” Chalke recalled. “Blood was shed from both of us, and with a few stoppages, it was a tough fight. But I finally worked him out and dominated the final round, winning unanimously 3:0.”
This high-stakes victory highlighted not just Chalke’s physical skill, but his strategic mind and mental toughness. Despite the physical toll of the fight, Chalke adapted and overcame his opponent, earning a unanimous decision from the judges. This victory cemented his place as the European Kickboxing Champion, a title that reflects years of rigorous training, sacrifice, and dedication.
Reflecting on the significance of the win, Chalke expressed his deep gratitude to his coaches, family, and friends, who supported him through every step of his journey. “This title means everything. It’s the result of years of training, sacrifice, and passion for kickboxing,” he shared. “I’m proud to bring this victory home.”
Chalke’s kickboxing journey began several years ago at Miles Martial Arts, a local Taekwon-do and Kickboxing club, where he enrolled after his son took up the sport. After returning to kickboxing at the age of 45, Chalke proved that age is no barrier to athletic achievement. Taking on younger, more experienced competitors, he rose to the top, proving that it’s never too late to pursue your passions.
“People often think we’re too old to start a new sport,” Chalke said. “But I believe age is just a number. Returning to kickboxing felt right, and it’s been an incredible journey.” His success has become an inspiration for adults who may feel it’s “too late” to follow their passion.
A significant part of Chalke’s success has been his relationship with Benn Fillingham, head instructor at Miles Martial Arts and fellow Team GB competitor. “A special thanks goes to Benn Fillingham,” Chalke said. “We’ve been on this journey together, and his unwavering support has been integral to my progression in Kickboxing. I hope people young and old see our achievements and are inspired to follow in our footsteps.”
With his European title in hand, Chalke now looks forward to continuing his journey in kickboxing, eager to take on new challenges on the international stage. He remains committed to sharing his knowledge and inspiring the next generation of fighters at Miles Martial Arts.
Chalke’s victory is a powerful reminder that with dedication, hard work, and the right support, anything is possible — no matter your age.
